Water risks include shortages due to droughts or floodings, reduced product quality, and impacts on people's right to clean water and sanitation. The financial risks are driven by stricter regulations and rising purchase prices.
Global agriculture accounts for approximately 70 percent of all freshwater use.
The use of fresh water is particularly problematic when growing crops with high water consumption in regions with water stress*. Climate impacts such as droughts and floodings affect water availability and thus increase the need for sustainable water use.
The Martin & Servera Group's purchase of crops with high water use produced in areas with a high risk of water stress has a significant impact. To reduce the impact on the environment, secure food security and protect the right to water in affected communities, we will:
have knowledge of water risks, risk commodities and risk countries in affected functions
have supplier requirements to identify and streamline the use of water
identify and manage water risks in the supplier assessment when developing private label products
actively collaborate with stakeholders to develop practices for sustainable water use
*Water stress occurs when the supply of fresh water in an area is not sufficient to cover the needs of society.
